AMSTERDAM - A four apartment house in Amsterdam caught fire around noon Friday.
At least five people including a father and his three daughters lived at 246 Guy Park Avenue.
No one was seriously hurt. The fire chief thinks the fire started in the back of the building on the first floor.
There was too much fire and smoke for firefighters to get inside when they arrived.
"A lot of heavy smoke coming out of the attic, which indicates it already went up the back of the building and into the attic. So they pulled guys back, set up some other lines and went defensive at that point," explained Chief Michael Whitty with the Amsterdam Fire Department.
"Any neighbor is a friend of mine and it certainly is tragic to have something like this happen any time of the year, but especially this time of the year around the holidays," acknowledged Chad Majewski, neighbor and city alderman.
The Red Cross has been called to help the displaced families. Firefighters weren't sure on a cause yet.
