LATHAM -- A local competition is helping to prove it's never too early to start thinking about a career in science.

Twelve teams of elementary and middle school students competed Saturday in the semifinals of the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament.

The students were challenged to make a robot that will help human beings interact with animals.

“This is the time that they start to lose interest,” said co-director John Houston. “Either because they think it's too hard, or that maybe it's not for them. But when they start it, and they see what they can do, it really helps.”

Saturday’s winners, from Ravena, Shen, Broadalbin, the Albany Academies, and Queensbury, will go on to compete in the championship Feb. 25 in Poughkeepsie.
