WEST GHENT – A complete and utter absence of checks and balances when it comes to money.

That’s how the deputy state comptroller Nelson Sheingold described what NewsChannel 13 first told you about Wednesday in West Ghent.

The former treasurer of the West Ghent Fire Department is accused of stealing over $55,000 from the department. To make matters worse, the attorney general’s office says 46-year-old Gail Cesternino was married to the chief while she was taking the cash.

“Any dollar stolen of public funds is appalling,” Sheingold said. “These numbers are simply unacceptable. This should be a wake up call to not only fire departments but to all places handling public money. You have to have the right controls in place and protect the public dollars.”

Joint investigations like this one have led to dozens of convictions and more than $11 million in restitution.
