Friends reunited after 70 years before Union football game

SCHENECTADY – It was a reunion 70 years in the making on Saturday. Two friends were reunited at the Union College-St. Lawrence football game at Frank Bailey Field. 

Donald Sommers and Teddy Rosen grew up in the Albany area together. Sommers ended up going to Union College while Rosen went to St. Lawrence. Both left school early to join the Army during World War II and lost touch through the years.

But on Saturday, Union honored their friendship and service by having them reunite and participate in the coin toss before the game.

“I'm just very happy to see the guy after all these years,” said Sommers. “We just disappeared and then 70 years later here we are."

“I think it was very exciting, very high emotions… brought back memories,” added Rosen.

After the coin toss, the 95-year-old Sommers and the 93-year old Rosen were able to sit in the stand and enjoy the game.

Union won 30-6.
