GLOVERSVILLE – A fire destroyed a building in Gloversville on Saturday morning.

The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at an old factory on West 11th Ave. It took firefighters hours to knock down the flames. With flames so big, Gloversville fire chief Tom Groff says he was concerned for the safety of his crew.

He says the building is the old JBF Leather Factory and it's been abandoned for at least a decade.

"The people who owned it went out of business. They walked away. They left it,” Groff said. “The county does our foreclosures. They didn't want to touch it because it's full of chemicals and stuff from the tanning process."

Groff says with no owner, the city is left to clean up the mess with very little resources. He also says it's a possibility it was arson, but it'll take some time to figure out the exact cause.

Area photographer Jon Seelow photographed the building in recent years. Click here to see his photos.
