LATHAM – The cold didn't stop Guptill’s from firing up the soft serve machines for the first time this year on Saturday.

There was a steady stream of customers who waited all winter to savor this moment. They say they weren't going to let this cold snap get in the way of their twist with chocolate sprinkles.

“I love the weather,” one customer said. “The weather doesn't matter because I've been waiting for this to open for months already.”

“I can guarantee it won't melt,” added Holly Symonds of Guptill’s. “You can get anything and it won't get messy today.”

The Empire State Plaza skating rink has been closed much of the season due to warm weather. Some skaters say it should stay open to make up for lost time. But it will close for the season Sunday.
