ALBANY -- Washington Park Road near New Scotland Avenue in Albany's Washington Park was closed for most of Saturday morning as investigators tried to figure out what led to a crash that killed a 21-year-old woman.

Approximately [at 4 a.m.], we received a call that someone was struck by a vehicle on Washington Park Road,” said Steve Smith of the Albany Police Department.

Police say when they got there, they found the victim on the roadway. They say she was hit by an SUV and left for dead.

“We did speak to some witnesses at the scene who said the SUV fled the scene,” said Smith.

She was taken to Albany Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. There is no word on exactly what the young victim was doing in Washington Park alone or where she was headed at 4 a.m.

Residents who use the park on a daily basis say it is awful and disappointing to hear a young woman's life was cut short.

“That's so sad,” said park goer Ashley Leonard. “That's terrible.”

Park goers like Leonard say cars often don't respect pedestrians or runners as they come through the park going faster than the speed limit.

“I'll see a couple of younger people speeding right through," said Leonard. "Or [they] won't wait for us or won't stop for walkers that come in the crosswalks."

In the meantime, the search is on for the driver of the SUV. Investigators say anyone with information about the crash should contact Albany police at 518-462-8039.
