Republican Steve McLaughlin declared victory in the race for Rensselaer County Executive, beating Democrat Andrea Smyth.
Yet, Smyth is calling for a recount in the closely contested race. McLaughlin leads by just under 1,000 votes but absentee ballots have yet to be counted.
Both were running to replace Kathy Jimino, who decided not to seek re-election. Jimino's deputy lost the Republican primary.
