MENANDS – Carol Darmetko said her prom was great. But the memory of what it took for her to get to her high school prom is still fresh in her mind.

"I honestly did borrow a dress for my prom and I remember it being stressful for my family as far as the dress and the cost associated with it," she said.

She never wants another young girl to go through that. So enter The Prom Closet. Just as the name implies, the room is filled with prom dresses.

"We just want them to have the experience they would have if they were going to pay for their dress," Darmetko said. "We want it to be a boutique."

There are shoes, bags, and jewelry. It's all free.

"They were donated. So all the girls who donated the dresses are paying it forward," said Jean Parker.

Attending one of the most important events in a high schooler’s life has gotten real expensive.

"You're probably talking about $1,000 with tickets, hair, shoes and the dress," Darmetko said.

Darmetko and Parker are members of the group Pay It Forward Together. Their prom closet is located inside the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Menands. Any girl is welcome to come and get a dress.

"The girls come in and it brings tears when they find that dress," Parker said.
