January 12, 2017 05:31 PM

WATERFORD - The state Department of Environmental Conservation commissioner sent a stern letter to Momentive Performance Materials following two spills on the company's property Thursday.

Those spills involved a small amount of diesel. However, the commissioner says there have been a significant number of other spills and violations at the plant since workers went on strike in November. He says DEC will be taking action to address them.

The union and Momentive were supposed to be on the third day of negotiations with a mediator Thursday.

Momentive says the union presented a proposal that put the two further apart than their previous offer.

Union workers have been on strike for over two months over employee healthcare, retiree healthcare and 401k plans. They are now able to draw unemployment.

DEC says it will continue to vigorously monitor the facility.
