WILTON - Two days after police say nine-year-old Zane William Peterson was left for dead at the Pyramid Pines Mobile Home Park in Wilton, New York State Police say they have the vehicle involved in the incident.

“I heard something and looked and I seen the kid laying down on the road and I seen a white S-U-V go by,” said Jason Voland.

Voland said the victim and his son were playing together shortly before it happened.

He said his girlfriend called 9-1-1.

“Eventually he came to and she said his face was really...looked like a baseball bat hit him and it was all cut up and stuff,” Voland said. “Then he threw up and he was screaming.”

Neither Jason or his son, Jason Jr., saw Peterson actually get hit. But they both said seeing him in that condition was hard.

“I saw my friend on the ground and I saw blood on him a little bit,” said Jason Voland Jr.

Relatives say they want whoever is responsible brought to justice.

“He's got a fractured skull with a fractured jaw,” said Peterson’s Aunt, Patricia Woodruff. “So he's in a neck brace where he can't really move his neck.”

Woodruff said Peterson was taken off of the ventilator and is being given oxygen to breathe.

She also said Peterson is responsive and able to open his eyes.

He still cannot move.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.

“Hitting a child and taking off is just awful,” Woodruff said. I don't understand how someone could do that.”

Meantime, the community is reminded of just how different things could have been.

“It's traumatic,” said Woodruff. “It's amazing how your life could change in a matter of minutes.”

“I kind of felt sick, said Voland.” “I just seen a little kid that was playing with my kid just a second ago. It could have been him,” he said.
