Six people ranging in ages from 6 to 43 were unable to free themselves from the gorge.

When the Canajoharie Fire Department arrived at 6:33 p.m., they were able to navigate the class three rapids and rough terrain and rescue those trapped.

Police say heavy rains and floods contributed to the rising rapids which caught the hikers and swimmers off guard.

At 6:52 p.m., another call went out to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for more missing people along the creek.

In all, crews rescued 13 people at three different locations along the creek.

All 13 were evacuated by the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Every person was brought to safety by 12:37 a.m. Wednesday.
