ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - It's been two decades since a 62-year-old Montgomery County man suddenly disappeared, and state police are still investigating.
A friend reported John Sapienza, of St. Johnsville, missing in February 1997 after receiving a phone call from Sapienza's wife that his van had been found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot in the Utica suburbs.
A store manager confirmed that Sapienza's vehicle had been in the parking lot for about a month.
Police say Sapienza had separated from his wife and had planned to travel cross-country to visit his daughter in California. He never arrived there and hasn't been heard from since.
Police believe his disappearance is suspicious.
Sapienza had gray hair, brown eyes and may have had a mustache when he disappeared.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Troop D Headquarters at 315-366-6000.
