Pistol and revolver owners must update gun license

BALLSTON SPA - County Sheriff departments, and judges, are responsible for granting pistol permits in New York State so it's not surprising that gun owners now required to renew their license reach out to local law enforcement to remain compliant.

My office has been inundated," explains Sheriff Michael Zurlo.

Under New York's SAFE Act, pistol and revolver owners who received a license prior to January 15, 2013 must re-certify by the end of January 2018.  It's a free process and can be completed online.  Or, in person, at any NYSP barracks.

"We have not been notified by the New York State Police Pistol Permit Bureau as to what the process is going to be and had no communication," contends Zurlo.

Saratoga County Clerk, Craig Hayner, did receive information from the NYSP but joined the Sheriff in expressing concern about county resources being used to enforce a state law.  

Zurlo is adamant: his job is to protect the citizens of Saratoga County and all manpower will go towards that, not he says, chasing down non-compliant gun owners.

When asked why he opposed the re-licensing Zurlo responded, "It's another unnecessary burden on pistol permit owner in New York State and my county here and I don't see the reason for it.
