A crash police say was caused by Gracelynn's mother.

20-year-old Alison Pecor was arraigned in Hadley Town Court Wednesday afternoon on charges of vehicular assault and vehicular manslaughter.

Police say she was under the influence of two different drugs, narcotics they say, when she drove her Mitsubishi Galant on Route 9N and crashed head-on into another car.

Pecor's daughter was in a child's car seat in the back, but police say it was facing the wrong way and the little girl was not strapped in.

"If the child's in the car seat the proper way here maybe we're not talking about these charges," said Sheriff Mike Zurlo.

Pecor said nothing outside court. And she spoke softly inside when Judge Leland Aldrich asked her if she understands the charges against her.

She wiped away tears as the judge described the manslaughter charge.

Sheriff Zurlo saying he has no reservations about charging a mother whose child died.

"We need to speak for the victim," said Zurlo. "We need to speak for that 18-month old."

Police brought the vehicular assault charge because the driver of the other car was seriously injured and is still hospitalized more than a month and a half after the crash.

The charge of vehicular manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 5 to 15 years in state prison.
