Saratoga County Sheriff holds shooter drill at Clifton Park library

CLIFTON PARK - There were about 70 people at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library, doing what you'd expect Wednesday afternoon.

Until the announcement boomed through the PA system.

"There's an intruder in the building. Intruder in the building."

What happened over the next minute and a half, police say, was a typical response to a terrifying situation. People either chose to hightail it to the nearest exits or hide.

After 90 seconds was up, Saratoga County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Cooper, a 30-year veteran, went looking for people to see how they reacted.

Most people got out, some hid under desks or behind book shelves.

Three women hid in a rest room, but when they realized the door didn't lock they left the bathroom, ran to another room and blocked the door with a cart full of chairs.
"We were just trying to figure out some way to slow them down," said Bonnie Conrad of Ravena.

"Maybe next time we'd grab more of the tables and pushed the tables because that would have added more of a barrier," said Valerie Plamondon of Clifton Park.

Deputy Cooper says if the scenario was real the women might have saved their lives by blocking the door, but lost their lives by leaving the first room they were in.

"Any room you enter, you never want to leave until law enforcement comes and gets you."

Others participants did nothing at all. Either they didn't hear the announcement or walked in after it started.

Deputy Cooper says the whole drill is about teaching people to react immediately.

"It's that 8-10 seconds that you freeze could get you killed."
