Saratoga event benefits former racehorses

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The "Run for the Horses" 5K was held Saturday at the Saratoga Spa State Park.

The run benefits several non-profits that provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Organizers say it's important to have events like these, so people know that there is someone who will take care of the horses after they're done racing.

“In the Saratoga area especially, many people are very concerned with the welfare of horses, and animals in general,” said Jennifer Stevens of RACE. “A lot of people don't know that there are aftercare organizations thinking about this all year long.”

The average racehorse retires at 5 years old, but then goes on to live another 20 or so years.
