Schenectady County raises tobacco buying age to 21

SCHENECTADY -- After a lot of discussion over the past month, Schenectady County has made it official. Schenectady County has raised the age to buy tobacco to 21.

Lawmakers Tuesday voted in favor of raising the legal age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21.

Those in favor of the law say it will help protect young people, and decrease smoking in the county. But a lot of business owners are against it.

Several other counties in New York have approved similar laws, including Albany County.
