Kali Villarosa was in 4th grade when she realized the protective bubble she had lived in, had burst. She’s now a senior at Skidmore College.

"This boy came up to me. He was like, ‘You have two les[bian parents]? That’s disgusting. That’s not normal,’" recalled Villarosa. "I wouldn’t say I was sheltered at all. It was just my first real experience being like, ‘Wait, what do you mean, ‘not normal,’ ‘disgusting?’"

Raised by lesbian parents, one mom was Linda Villarosa, an activist and journalist of books and magazine articles, who has won numerous awards. Her grandmother is Clara Villarosa, an author and entrepreneur.

Discussions of race, gender and sexuality is what she was privy to.

"I come from one of the most inclusive homes I think I’ve just ever heard of in my entire life. There was just so much to take in growing up and so many different identities represented. It was a lovely, lovely household community village," explained Villarosa.

The three generations will come together on the campus of Skidmore College on Friday for a discussion on gender and how it intersects with race and class. It’s something that Villarosa thinks is perfect for the times we live in.

"People are just picking and choosing different things instead of seeing the overall message of what is trying to get across. That is equity, inclusion and equality," explained Villarosa.

Once Villarosa graduates from Skidmore with a major in international affairs, she goes onto grad school and a career in the United States Foreign Service.

"For me, as someone who’s been so privileged in my body, in so many spaces. I want to be a voice for those who do not have that same space to raise their voices."
