Snow day brings joy, headaches to North Country

December 12, 2017 06:58 PM

Snow was falling heavily in Saratoga County Tuesday morning before turning to rain. It continued to snow steadily in Warren and Washington counties Tuesday afternoon and evening.

It was slow moving Tuesday. The snow made the morning commute difficult and forced schools to delay or close.

In Saratoga Springs, a crash on snow-covered Brook Road sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries.

Just down the road from there, Renee Frey, a 1st grade teacher, spent her morning off from school shoveling her driveway. She also got some Christmas shopping done online.

If you didn't have to blow or shovel snow, the sledding hill in High Rock Park is for you. It kept kids busy on this snow day.

Though we often hear complaints about the snow, you won't get them at Falls Farm and Garden. Tim Havens has been selling snowblowers for 35 years. He says a pre-Christmas snowstorm is just what retailers need.

"We live in upstate New York and almost always we have a winter and this one has arrived in full fury in the second week of December. It just doesn't get any better to give us all a white Christmas and now people are going to be in the mood to Christmas shop," pointed out Havens.

The state Department of Transportation says nearly all of the 170 plows used on Tuesday will be transferred to salt trucks and head out on the highways.
