ALBANY -- Former Albany County District Attorney Sol Greenberg has died.
He passed away Wednesday night at the age of 95.
Greenberg served as District Attorney for 25 years but he'd tell you a more important number. He was married to his wife Bea for 72 years.
His last election, in 1997, he had the Democratic, Republican, Conservative and Independence Party endorsements. After retiring in 2000, Greenberg became the elder statesman of the law in Albany.
He would attend graduations and other events at area schools and was a guest at Pearl Harbor Day remembrances each year. He spent three years in the Navy during World War II and spent 25 years with the Naval Reserve. He retired as a full commander in 1970.
He created quite a family tree of lawyers in the Capital Region. New York state Sen. Neil Breslin praised Greenberg and said he learned a great deal from him. Himself a lawyer, Breslin said that while everyone today wants to look at the black and white of the law, Greenberg could look at the same crime committed by two very different people, understand their circumstances and environment, and make the appropriate recommendations.
Greenberg was also the first district attorney to use DNA as evidence in a case.
"We've lost a great person," said longtime Capital Region attorney Arnold Proskin. "He lived a long, good life. He did a lot for [Albany] County."
Greenberg leaves behind his wife Bea and two children.
Current Albany County District Attorney David Soares released the following statement on Greenberg:
"Sol Greenberg's passing has left us all stunned and saddened. To so many of us in the legal community Sol was our boss and leader. The list of attorneys who practiced law under his leadership are too numerous to count. But more than a mentor and teacher, Sol was a friend and father. He fiercely defended his prosecutors and worked hard within the DA's Association to improve the institution of District Attorney. Sol Greenberg will always be my friend, my mentor, and my DA."
