Kids' boutique a vision of beauty

GUILDERLAND – A local woman is leaving her dream, creating a place for little girls to feel pampered and special.

Tantrums Spa and Boutique in Crossgates Mall is a sight to behold. The walls are brightly colored. Music from "Frozen" along with other pop songs bellows from the back of the store. Along with nails, the little girls can dip their tiny toes into one of many basins, while sitting on a hot pink sofa. Girls can also get their hair cornrowed or braided and also play "dress-up" in princess attire.

The business is the brainchild of Nicole Chandler, who after cosmetology school and with her daughters in mind didn’t want to be traditional or offer a scaled down version of a big girls’ nail salon.

"That wasn’t where I wanted them to be -- that environment there, the smells and everything. That’s what made me decide to get into something that was more chemical friendly, chemical free, where kids can actually come and have fun, get their nails painted, but still enjoy the time being themselves," explained Chandler. "Enhance their inner beauty."

However, creating a place like this was no child’s play. Chandler shopped her idea around, but few could catch her vision.

"I did ask for help from a lot of different places. People were like, ‘Well, what do you do? What is it? We don’t know about that,’" recalled Chandler. "Nobody really ever heard of it."

So she and her mom, who adds to the product line by making her own dolls, joined forces starting a mobile business.

"We went from house to house. My first party was in a U-Haul Truck. I’ll never forget that," admitted Chandler.

They eventually got a building. Last October, they moved to Crossgates Mall.

While Chandler makes little girls’ dreams come true. In real life, she knows it can take time. She advises other women not to give up.

"Just continue to keep going. Someone will acknowledge you. One day, you will get your calling. Next thing you know, you’ll be on the news like I am," Chandler beamed, with a big smile.
