Scammers posing as IRS representatives target victims on tax day

NewsChannel 13 was contacted by several viewers saying they received calls from people claiming to be IRS representatives on Tuesday. Two different versions of the scam phone calls were sent to us but both had similar messages. The alleged representatives claim the person they are calling has committed tax fraud, owes money and police officers will make arrest.
Kathleen Baker of Colonie shared her experience in hopes other people take note and do not fall victim.
"At first I thought it was legit. The way she was talking," said Baker.
Baker said she received a voicemail early Tuesday afternoon. She called the number back and says a caller ID system must have recognized her number, because the alleged service representative who picked up knew who she was and why she was calling.
"She was saying things like your tax returns from 2012 to 2017 and something about a criminal act and they did an audit and found there was a discrepancy," said Baker.
Baker says the alleged representative said the discrepancy was upwards of $5,000. She said red flags went up when the representative became threatening and aggressive.
"I asked to speak to her supervisor and she said I am a supervisor and I said well there's got to be someone else I can speak to and she said well why do you want to talk to a supervisor? I said I just want to confirm all this information," said Baker.
The call ended when Baker says it became clear the person on the other end suspected she was onto the scam. After that other attempts to get through to the line went unanswered.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance says it is not uncommon for these types of scams to peak around tax season. They warn people that IRS employees would never speak in a threatening manner and if anyone suspects they are being scammed they should report the fraud.
