Woman transforms true passion into fulfilling reality

For many people, what they do for a living is just a job to them. However, for one local woman, the typical job wasn’t working. It took her a while, but she finally found her passion.

Tess Palma-Martinez is in her element when she's creating, but that career almost didn't happen. In fact, she nearly got kicked out of college. The courses she was taking just weren't clicking.

She had forgotten that at the earliest point in her education, she had actually foretold her future, a career as a businesswoman. It reminded her of her authentic self. Her family reminded her of the artwork she made in first grade. It was a store called Tess’s. She changed majors and re-discovered her love of art, specifically a passion for large-scale installations. Today, her creations include plants as design elements.

In 2015, the childhood artwork became a reality in the name of a store called Forage + Sundry on 3rd Street in Troy. It’s a retail space and a place to hold do-it-yourself classes.

None of this would have happened if she hadn't had the courage to do what inspired her.
