Troy man arrested in connection with attempted abduction

August 09, 2017 06:47 PM

Troy police say they've caught the man who attacked two women near the Poestenkill Gorge last week. Daniel Flowers, 39, of Troy was arraigned in Troy City Court. Flowers was facing charges of public lewdness, attempted kidnapping and assault. The mother of the assault victim says thank God he was caught.

Flowers was arraigned in front of Judge Carmelo Laquidara. Police say they arrested Flowers Tuesday evening at his home in Troy. Investigators believe he is the man who approached women in downtown Troy on July 29 and did a lewd act, then got violent a few days later.

Police say one week ago, Flowers attacked two women in the area of the gorge and tried to abduct one of them.

The mother of one of the two 20-year-old women who were hiking told NewsChannel 13 on Monday their attacker suddenly came after them and broke her daughter's hand and dragged her about 50-feet.

"What terrified the girls the most besides being angry that this guy was trying to abduct them or abuse them or whatever he was going to do, was he stared at my daughter's friend and said, 'You go, I'm taking her,'" described the mother.

Last week, Troy police put out pictures of their suspect and asked for help from the public.

"We're certainly glad Troy police have made an arrest in this case, as I'm sure the community is as well. This is a disturbing allegation -- and that's what they are at this point, allegations. It'll be up to the courts to determine exactly what happened here," noted Rensselaer County D.A. Joel Abelove.

The judge wasn't even able to consider bail in this case because it appears that Flowers has at least two felony convictions in South Carolina.

He's being held in the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
