Council OKs trash fee in Troy

TROY – On the final workday of the year, the City Council worked well into the night at the Mayor’s request. When it all was said and done, the outgoing council wound up approving a trash fee 5-4.
Nine people spoke on the ordinances, seven were against the new fee. Councilman McGrath called it “the big fat lie” about a fee and challenged it as a tax instead. Councilman Jim Gulli suggested the administration sell “For Sale” signs to raise revenue because he feels people will move out of the Collar City.
Councilman Robert Doherty said he believes it is the most advantageous route and best for our future. The five votes were Doherty, John Donohue, Lynn Kopka, Dean Bodnar and Erin Sullivan-Teta while Council President Carmella Mantello, Kim Ashe-McPherson joined Gulli and McGrath in opposing it.
Mayor Patrick Madden was not in attendance, instead represented by Deputy Mayor Monica Kurzejeski and assistant city comptroller Andy Piotrowski. The council was told that Mayor Madden would be back in town before 11:59 p.m. December 31 to sign the legislation.
