WATERVLIET - The city of Watervliet got back to NewsChannel 13 Friday about a sewage problem involving three homes in the city.

Those homes were never hooked up to the city sewer system, so any sewage and wastewater from the home is going directly to the Hudson River instead of the treatment plant.

City General Manager Jeremy Smith tells NewsChannel 13 they discovered this process as they use grant money to inspect the city's entire system.

That effort is still underway, so it's possible more homes may be affected.

He says it's up to the homeowners to fix the problem and get hooked up to the sewer system. That means they foot the bill as well and it could cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to as much as $10,000.

Smith says notices were sent to the three homeowners Thursday so they may not even be aware yet.

He did not give us the addresses.
