Local woman runs to raise money for asthma sufferers

April 14, 2017 11:41 AM

Running is something Pilar Arthur-Snead never, ever envisioned herself doing.

“I was pretty adverse to it,” she said. “I would say I would only run if someone was chasing me.”

She had an excuse not to.

“I’ve had asthma since I was 11 or 12 years old," Arthur-Snead said.

But several years ago, an episode forced her to rethink her health and specifically her lungs.

“I fainted and blacked out,” she said.

Thanks to her dogs, her husband found her and soon after the pair decided to take to the road.

“We decided to do a couch-to-5K,” she said.

This year, she set her sights on the New York City Marathon.

“I wanted to run because I saw it on TV and it was vibrant,” she said.

But she didn't make the lottery. However, she could run for charity. She chose one that supports kids with asthma.

“I'm responsible for raising $3,000 by September,” she said. “I've raised $1,000 so far.”

And she's ready to run for it.

“My full gusto,” Arthur-Snead said.
