Capital Region women among hundreds of thousands to march in Washington

January 12, 2017 06:59 PM

The day after Donald Trump is inaugurated as the country’s 45th president, hundreds of thousands of women will converge on Washington, D.C. for the Women's March on Washington, including women who will be on 55 buses coming from upstate New York. They say the goal is to remind the new president and Congress that women’s rights are human rights.

"When I saw that kind of hatred, I couldn't believe that that would be supported in an election and when it was, my heart sank. I'm going to start crying but that's what happened," admitted Lynn Shanks, a march coordinator in Saratoga.

She is referring to the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump. She's not the only woman turned off by the president elect.

"I hadn’t ever been political before. I kind of always sat on the sidelines, taking things for granted for a little bit. When I saw the election results come in, I was devastated. For a few days, it took me a while to pick myself up and realize I needed to do something about it," explained Lori McCaffrey, a march coordinator in Albany.

What she and thousands of women are doing is heading to Washington, D.C. for the Women's March on Washington. Fifty-five buses from upstate New York will make the trip. Through word of mouth and a national website, as many as 200,000 women are expected. A web seminar is being linked nationally on teaching them how to be an effective marcher.

Women have marched before. In 1997, an estimated 750,000 African-American women marched for social change in Philadelphia. This march is said to be in direct opposition to President-elect Trump, but McCaffrey disagrees.

"This march is a lot more than just about him. It’s about Congress as well," McCaffrey noted. "It’s about the Supreme Court that are passing laws and regulations and so we’ve always said this is not an anti-march. This is a pro-march."
