ALBANY – The UAlbany women’s and men’s basketball teams play for America East titles this weekend with automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The UAlbany women’s basketball team is looking for a sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes will host the America East final for the fifth consecutive year, and guess who's back? Maine, the school UAlbany beat in last year's America East championship game.
UAlbany beat Vermont and Hartford to reach the title game. Maine is the No. 4 seed, coming here after upsetting top-seeded New Hampshire in the semifinals.
The Great Danes split with the Black Bears during the regular season, losing in Orono after having an 11-point lead at the half. Then in the rematch at SEFCU Arena, UAlbany held on for a 64-60 win.
The UAlbany women have now won 16 consecutive America East tournament games. Their title game game will air on ESPNU. Tip is slated for 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Meantime, the UAlbany men's basketball team won at Stony Brook Monday night to reach the America East final and will play in a familiar spot at top-seeded Vermont.
The Great Danes are the No. 3 seed and in their fourth league title game in five years. The men will play in Burlington for the America East title for the first time since 2013 when they won by four.
Vermont advanced to the title game with a 74-41 home victory over No. 4 seed New Hampshire.
The UAlbany men's game at Vermont is Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
