SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior quarterback Nick Cascione threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns to lead Union College to 28-23 win over defending Liberty League champion Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

The Dutchmen extend their winning streak to seven games and are now 7-1 (3-0 Liberty League) on the season. Hobart falls to 5-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Against Hobart, Union's defensive turnovers were another significant factor as Union created a total of three turnovers; stopping Hobart on two fourth downs and recovering a fumble late in the game.

The game started slow as neither team scored in the first quarter, but the scoring drought ended when Hobart drove down the field on an 11-play drive that culminated in a 28-yard Kyle Hacket field goal to go up 3-0 with 3:37 left in the first half.

Union followed up the Hobart field goal with Cascione throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Griffin Beal with only 23 seconds remaining in the half. The score put Union up 7-3. Beal later made a spectacular one-handed diving catch to haul in a 47-yard heave from Cascione. Beal ended the game with 59 receiving yards.

Union built on the lead as senior wide receiver and captain Alex Kaplanovich held onto a 33-yard touchdown pass from Nick Cascione with 12:22 left in the third quarter as Union went up 14-3 on Hobart.

Cascione then threw for his third and final touchdown pass with 1:07 left in the third quarter to make the score 21-3. Junior wide receiver Chris Nicholas took the pass 64 yards for a touchdown while eluding two Hobart defenders.

Hobart answered the Union scoring barrage with a two-yard touchdown run courtesy of running back Dakota Harvey with 9:14 to cut its deficit to 21-10.

The Dutchmen responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that ended in Kinzelmann lunging over the goal line from six yards out for a touchdown that put Union up 28-10 with 6:33 left in the game.

In the final minutes, Hobart made a comeback attempt that included a nine-yard Shane Sweeney touchdown pass to receiver Jake Catalioto with 4:37 remaining in the game. The Statesmen the scored their third touchdown of the quarter bring come back within five.

But with only 25 seconds remaining in the contest, it was too little too late, as Union recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure its third conference win of the season.

Union will travel to Ithica on Saturday, Nov. 3, for a 1 p.m. (ET) game against the Bombers at Butterfield Stadium.
