TROY -- It's robot madness at RPI this weekend.

The campus is hosting the New York Tech Valley Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. The three-day event features 36 teams of high school students.

There are groups from the Capital Region and around the state, but also from South Carolina, Canada, India and Turkey.

The students had six and a half weeks to build their robot that go head-to-head against each other.

"It is a robotics competition, but we'd all tell you it's not about the robot," said RPI electrical engineering associate professor Paul Schoch. "It's about teaching students about [STEM] fields. They work with mentors in the area."

Some winning teams from this weekend will qualify for the world championships next month.
