SCHENECTADY - Union College in Schenectady was founded in 1795 as a liberal arts college. The college took a big step on Friday towards expanding its Departments of Science and Engineering.

The $100 million project includes an addition to the Wold Center along with renovations to the existing building.

The 142,000 square feet of space will house classrooms and state of the art labs. Students will share corridors and equipment with other departments.

"When you talk to employers looking for people coming out of the STEM fields, they all emphasize partnership. This building has the kinds of space that faculty can work with students, students can work with each other and really get that kind of team experience," explained Union College President Stephen Ainlay.

The project will be paid for through a combination of fundraising, reserves and debt financing.

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for May.
