GREENWICH -- Fried dough and farm animals are staples of county fairs. But STEM? The Washington County Fair has that as well. The fair hosted Career and Technical Education Day on Friday.

“I was involved in this program for two years and I loved it very much,” said student Frederick Scott.

Instructors and students were on hand all day Friday to show off what people can learn in 11th and 12th grades thanks to BOCES programs. One of those skills is the piping in HVAC or heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

“In the past, we used copper tubing and we soldered,” said HVAC instructor Jeff Rescott. “I'd say in the last ten years, some of that technology has changed and today we brought some of the new plastic tubings we use.”

Now, they use a press machine that crimps the fittings right to the tubing, which means a solder gun isn’t needed.

“No longer do you have to heat something up,” Rescott said. “You can get away using this new technology.”

When it comes to the skills the students are learning, the benefit is twofold. BOCES says Career and Technical Education graduates make an average of $19,000 more a year than college graduates with associate degrees. Graduates can also help out around the house.

“When you go home, you get to use your wiring skills, your outlets, and  basic wiring,” Scott said.

The Career and Technical Education program is offered in connection with about 30 local school districts, so if you're interested, check with your school.
