STEM making wine bottles come alive

Augmented reality is probably best connected with last year's craze, "Pokémon Go." Now, it's changing the way some people look at wine labels.
"Fun, simple to use and it's a great way to take wine to the next level," explained Tim Irwin, with 19 Crimes.
Each label features someone sent to a penal colony in Australia, after being convicted in 18th century England. Each cork in the bottle lists the crime.
"People really started to collect the corks and engage with us on social media and sharing their stories, so the next natural step for us was augmented reality," noted Irwin.
So now, when you get the app and put your phone in front of the bottle, those convicts can talk to you and explain what happened.
"Not to be confused with virtual reality. So virtual reality is basically putting on the goggles," pointed out Irwin. "Augmented reality is about altering the perception of what's in front of you."
The aisles of your liquor store aren't likely to be overrun with people staring at their smartphones, but Irwin says it can be really fun to watch the way people use this.
Right now, three of the labels are available on the app. By October, you can experience all 19.
