Crews battled a large fire at a former church in Waterford Friday night.

Firefighters first arrived on scene around 6:30 p.m. Friday and when they arrived at the former church, flames were shooting through the roof of the old church.

The former church located at 110 First Avenue in Waterford, N.Y. was most recently an apartment home according to firefighters.

Firefighters from several departments worked on the fire for a little more than two hours before getting it under control just before 9 p.m. Friday.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from more than a mile away.

NewsChannel 13 spoke with the assistant chief of the North Side Fire District, Cameron Gardner, who said there were no injuries to any of the firefighters.

Gardner said one person was inside the building when the fire broke out but was out of the home safely before crews arrived on scene.

National Grid arrived on scene quickly to shut the power off to the building.

Crews began demolishing the building just before 11 p.m. Friday.

Northside Fire District said there is currently no cause of the fire as it is under investigation by the Saratoga County Fire Investigation Unit.
