Ten inmates from the Albany County Jail are facing new charges after a facility-wide shakedown this weekend.
Sheriff Craig Apple says there has been an uptick in violence in the Albany County Jail.
He says in order to keep officers and other inmates safe, they shut down the jail and searched cells and common areas looking for items that could be used to hurt staff or inmates.
"We did find several shanks, several pills, and on top of that, we also had a lot of K2 synthetic marijuana attempted to be smuggled into the facility. We have been catching it left and right, so we will continue to do shake downs. If we have to do one a week, we will do one a week. The inmates don't like it, but we have to keep everybody safe within those walls,” Sheriff Apple explained.
The ten inmates were arrested on various charges including possessing prison contraband, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal mischief.
