Days-long Albany protest ends in confrontation with police

Albany police clashed with protesters occupying the roadway in front of the South Station Thursday afternoon. Police said they had to leave.

It turned into a wild and potentially dangerous scene. Protesters made a barricade surrounding themselves, using garbage bins and dumpsters.They were given a 15-minute warning to clear out. When they didn’t, a large force of Albany police officers with riot gear moved in.

Protesters had been occupying Arch Street for six days.

There was a great deal of resistance and scuffles with police. Protesters were wrestled to the ground, handcuffed, and arrested.

The tents, sleeping bags, and portable heaters were left strewn across the pavement. DGS crews were cleaning everything up, including power washing graffiti off buildings.
