ALBANY - A 15-year-old Latham girl is dead after the latest shooting in Albany.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. Monday on Wilbur Street. Right after officers responded to a report of shots fired just east of Philip Street, they got a call that a young woman arrived in the emergency room at Albany Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound. She later died.

Police identified the victim as Destiny Greene. She was a student at Shaker High School.

Investigators say someone shot her during the Wilbur Street incident. Police Chief Eric Hawkins says she was not the intended target. He says she was with a group that was there as some sort of meet-up organized on social media when the shots rang out.

This is at least the fifth shooting in the city since Friday. Destiny is the tenth person to have been shot in the city in the past few days, and the fourth person to have died from a shooting in the last month.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan says there will be an increased law enforcement presence in the city in the wake of this violence, with the New York State Police and Albany County Sheriff's Department helping out the police department. She's also calling on the U.S. attorney to request federal assistance.

Destiny was a 10th grader at Shaker.

"We are profoundly saddened by this unspeakable tragedy," said North Colonie Superintendent D. Josheph Corr. "Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go out to Destiny’s family, friends and our community."

The school is making counseling available for students and staff.
