April 20 is the unofficial holiday to celebrate marijuana. Now that recreational marijuana is legal in New York, people may be wondering what they can and cannot do.
When it comes to smoking weed, people can do so in places where smoking tobacco is permitted.
People 21 and older are able to poses up to three ounces of marijuana, but they can't legally buy it in New York yet.
Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says that creates some confusion because you're breaking the law if you go to Massachusetts to buy it.
"The problem comes when you cross the state lines it’s technically a federal crime," Apple said. "So the feds have got some catching up to do if they in fact decide to change it, and that's going to have to get worked out, and with that said, I don't expect the U.S. DEA to sit out there and look for low-level marijuana users."
Apple says smoking marijuana while driving is also not allowed. They're looking to get technology, that would help detect marijuana in someone’s system up to three hours after smoking it.
