Police in Watervliet have determined that the skeletal remains found in a neighborhood on 13th Street belong to a newborn child.

"The callous manner in which this infant child was discarded violates the core of all decency and humanity. Abuse and maltreatment against children cannot be tolerated. Each member of the Watervliet Police Department, along with our law enforcement partners will continue to work tirelessly to bring the people responsible for this criminal act to justice," says Chief Joesph Centanni.

There was a heavy police presence Friday morning, where the remains were discovered buried in a yard early in the day. The scene had cleared by 12:30 p.m.

They say the people who live in the house near where the bones were found had nothing to do with it.

They also say there is no threat to the public.
