The first day of the inaugural Big G Classic Basketball Tournament took place Saturday at Washington Park in Albany.

Basketball players from all over came to play.  There were high school standouts, college players and even a few pros. While there was a lot of fun, the goal of the event was to  honor the late Gerald Campbell Sr. Campbell was a mentor and roll model in the community. Campbell served in the army for six years. He later worked as a civil service worker for the Department of Buildings & Regulatory Compliance for the city of Albany. He found great joy in helping people. Marquis Campbell is the son of Gerald. He is hoping the tournament can be a bright spot for the city of Albany in midst of all the violence.

"I'm a firm believer that timing is up to God. You know what I mean. I feel that with my father's birthday and the event that was planning. Who would know what was happening. You know something like this would definitely come, and come to suffice. I think the timing is perfect. I think this is what the city needs," said Marquis Campbell.

Saturday would've been Campbell's 61st birthday. The tournament also raised funds for Hicks Strong, a non profit that raises awareness about military suicide. The tournament continues Sunday.
