A scientist at UAlbany is studying hurricanes.
Brian Tang was recently awarded $2 million from the Office of Naval Research to study hurricane intensity.
He says current models do not forecast the rapid intensification very well.
Tang says this is due to three processes at play - the environment around the hurricane, thunderstorm clouds within the hurricane, and turbulence between those clouds and the ocean.
Tang compares the current resolution of computer models to a standard definition television set. He hopes to move to high definition and eventually to ultra-high definition.
Hear why he says it's so important to study these storms by watching the video of the story.
