May is "ALS Awareness Month"

Cristina DeMeo from Saratoga Springs is putting her skills to work to help us learn more about this devastating disease that robs people of muscle control.

Cristina is a high school senior and takes part in the summer program at the RNA Institute at the University at Albany.
She used her knowledge of bioinformatics to create an award-winning project that looks at the gene mutations that cause ALS.

Cristina won first prize in the Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair, and is a finalist in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair to be held virtually next week.

Learn more about what sparked her interest in ALS by watching the video.
