After Dr. Susan Trocciola of Schenectady met her medical crisis head-on, she's now finding her way back and starting a fresh chapter.

Trocciola is one of the few female cardiothoracic surgeons in the country. However, it would take her a while to recognize her own heart was damaged - not physically but emotionally, after she was diagnosed in 2015 with breast cancer.

Following treatment, she still wasn't herself – angry at the cancer and career she had invested so much in.

First scoffing at support groups, she eventually found one online called A Fresh Chapter. They host volunteer trips to Peru, India and South Africa to help cancer survivors heal emotionally. It was in South Africa that she finally looked cancer in the eye.
