Tracy Slocum loves the great outdoors. About three years ago, she set out to combine luxury and fun in a blanket. NewsChannel 13 first brought you her story on the waterproof blankets she designed called Pretty Rugged.
Then, Oprah selected Slocum's dog blanket, a smaller version of her original idea, as one of her “favorite things.”
Fast-forward to 2020 and the pandemic. However, instead of worrying, Slocum and her team got to work as people were being advised to distance themselves and head outdoors, they decided to make outdoor events more tolerable, creating products like the lap blanket, which people quickly snapped up, along with restaurants opting for outdoor dining.
They also decided to create a line of outdoor clothing-like bomber jackets, large purses, capelets, vests and more.
So even though their wholesalers stopped buying because of the pandemic, their retail was up over 40%.
Slocum says business is about understanding when to pivot but also how to create products to make people's lives a little better.
Check out some of the products by watching the video of Elaine Houston's story.
