GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. - This weekend, there will be a big celebration in Great Barrington, Massachusetts for a woman who was a courageous trailblazer.
Esther Dozier grew up in poverty in Alabama, but made up for what she didn't have with what she did, and that was courage.
She would leave Alabama, come to Great Barrington and make history in 1999 as the first female pastor of the historic Clinton AME Zion Church.
Even the unexpected was used as a tool when she needed to craft a sermon. In fact, she once used a Prince album to craft one!
She also gave a lot of unscripted public sermons on controversial issues. She was against the war in Iraq, and wanted her community to recognize Kwanzaa.
Now a celebration of her life and what would have been her 80th birthday is planned for April 2, 2022, at 4 p.m. at 352 Main Street in Great Barrington.
Hear from those who knew Dozier as they talk about some of their cherished memories of her by watching the video of Elaine Houston's story.
