The DMV is looking to crack down on what they say is a recent surge in catalytic converter thefts across the state. Some areas have seen increases up to 200% per year.
One of the main targets has been new car dealerships. The cost to the dealer for each catalytic converter is $2,000 or $3,000
The DMV says it will distribute etching kits to dealers.
Those kits will allow auto dealers to etch a traceable serial number onto the catalytic converter that can be quickly linked back to the vehicle from which it was stolen.
Dealers who want to get a kit should contact their local auto dealer association.
