SCHENECTADY -- The New York State Canal Corporation has launched a new campaign to promote the Canal corridor.

They have teamed up with a group of local outdoor recreation businesses to launch New York Canal Staycations.

The canal got off to a bit of a slow start this year.

“In March of course the pandemic hit, and coronavirus was in full force. We suspended our construction, which we do all winter-long, along the canal system for about two months,” Director of the New York State Canal Corporation Brian Stratton said. “We are finally back open. The entire Erie Canal is open for navigation along this beautiful waterway.”

Stratton says the Staycation program has been a smash hit.

“It is even better than we had hoped for,” Stratton said.

In Schenectady, at Mohawk Harbor, the program is totally booked up. However, there is still an opportunity for people who are looking to kayak.

People can rent a kayak for three hours from Upstate Kayaks. The cost is $25. You can kayak about eight miles down the canal and then you can get on a CDPHP bike and ride back.

There are other opportunities in Saratoga, Schuylerville, Rochester, and Buffalo.

“This is an opportunity for people to stay close to home, stay safe,” Stratton added.
