The coronavirus pandemic continues to hit many Capital Region families hard.

The Troy YMCA has collaborated with the US Department of Agriculture's Farmers to Families program to hold free drive-thru food box giveaways for the next three Fridays.

Food insecurity is something many people are facing for the first time during the pandemic. According to a report by the Food Research and Action Center, in 2018, nearly 8 million American adults reported members of their households sometimes or often did not have enough to eat.

Data collected between April and July of this year shows that number has surged to 26 to 29 million people.

In the Capital Region, the Food Pantries of the Capital District say nearly 50 percent of the food pantries in our area have experienced an increase in services – some up to 200 percent.

On Friday, a drive-thru food pantry is being offered through the YMCA. They are offering free food boxes to anyone who needs it.

It is going on all day at various locations Friday starting at 9 a.m.:

  • Troy YMCA, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Rensselaer’s Riverfront Park, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Greene County YMCA, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Albany County Plaza, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Each box will weigh between 30 and 40 pounds and has fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and eggs and dairy.

The drive-thru pantry is going on every Friday until the end of October. You can also walk up to get your box.
